Касаемо image sensor'ов - их тоже называют bucket brigade device :
The charges are read out by a pulse signal applied to the electrodes. This is sometimes called a bucket brigade device because of the similarity with a line of firemen moving buckets of water. The operation of one row of the CCD is shown in Figure 2.8. In two dimensions, another pulse signal reads the voltages along columns after they are read out from the rows.

An analogue shift register also forms the CCD chip and the shift register forms the other part of what is often known as a bucket brigade device. The buckets are the MOS capacitors and the brigade refers to the analogue shift register. The charge is passed from bucket to bucket through the device.
