Based on the successful APEX™ device architecture, the EPXA4 and EPXA1 devices that are now shipping, as well as the EPXA10 device that began shipping last October, incorporate an ARM922T™ processor core running at up to 200MHz. In addition to the processor core and its associated caches and memory management units, the ARM-based Excalibur devices include additional internal SRAM and DPRAM memory, peripherals, external memory controllers, and JTAG interfaces for software debug. Altera implemented the processor and its support functions as an embedded "stripe" at the edge of the device to optimize the subsystem's performance with no impact on the PLD logic or routing resources.
As the only embedded solution on the market integrating a processor subsystem with a PLD fabric, the ARM-based Excalibur embedded processor solution gives designers the ability to boot their system in a processor-centric mode and dynamically configure the programmable logic. Alternatively, users can boot the processor and configure the programmable logic through the JTAG port or other PLD-centric configuration modes
