The LFSR's are initialized with a "key", similar to a key used in cryptography. This is simply the initial value of the shift register on reset. The security lies in this key. There is nothing secret about the operation of an LFSR, but it is very difficult to generate the key based on a subset of the PRBS. The other important thing about this key is that several different FPGA designs can use the same LFSR with different keys without any compromise in security.
