China hunts for competitive talent
Posted : 01 Oct 2003
Because of China's growth in the electronics industry during the past years, the repertoire of basic technicians have reached a scale that is enough to meet the demand of various companies. In spite of this, however, headhunters are still on the lookout for skilled, high-end talents and compound engineers.
High-end talents refer to those who specialize on front-end technology. Compound engineers, on the other hand, refer to those with adept management skills, solid technical background and market sense. Presently, supervisors of team projects are usually engineers that were promoted to such positions, but their potential on management still needs to be honed.

In the communications sector, engineers for voice application development tends to be saturated, while those engaged in wireless data application are very "hot" in China nowadays. "For wireless data application, a technical manager with a sound market sense is most important for the successful development of a product," said Xie Daxiong, VP and general manager of CDMA division in ZTE, "Such talents not only require a rich technical background but must also have a strong market sense. Equally important is the capability to operate and cooperate within a team." For ZTE that is developing 3G equipment, it also lacks manpower with abilities in front-edge technology. Such skills could often help enterprises drive technical breakthroughs.

Moreover, jobs in the communications sector are also in high gear. "Network optimizing engineers will become in demand next year as universities generally do not foster these abilities. But in order to find specialized talents, the only way is to hunt and pirate from other companies," said Wangjing, senior manager of Di'an Human Resource Service Co. Ltd.

Xiang Zhihong of Datang Microelectronics Co. said that product and project managers are the most sought after. "During recruitment, we have a hard time because many candidates often don't have enough knowledge base or experience. One instance was when we needed a person to develop an unfamiliar product. We weren't able to find a suitable candidate in a matter of one month," Zhihong added.

What do they look for?
Best welcomed are those with both software and hardware expertise. Zhou Ligong, general manager of ZLG-MCU Inc., disclosed that his company lacks this kind of engineers so they pay high price to invite professors from universities to train their employees.

Sunshine Hi-Tech Co. hopes that software engineers engaged in operating systems, applications/programs and JAVA driver development also have certain experiences on hardware design. However, there's a scarcity of qualified talents in that category as well. "Hardware engineers often undergo software design trainings to become chief designers. On the other hand, it is very seldom that software engineers become chief designers," observed Tao Xianfang from Konka Group.

In the IC design sector, senior talents with system analysis capability are most sought after by companies. Again, both hardware and software design knowledge are prerequisites so as to define and divide the systems correctly.
